Oregano Essential Oil

Origanum vulgare ssp. hirtum

The dried herbal substance contains up to 5 % essential oil and they are characterized by a
carvacrol-rich chemotype.

The major constituents of O. vulgare leaves essential oil are carvacrol, up 65%, followed by p-cymene (5-15%) and γ-terpinene (5-15%), terpinene, caryophyllene, β-bisabolene, linalool, and 4-terpineol. Oregano oil has antibacterial, antifungal, antiparasitic, antimicrobial, and antioxidant properties.
The bioactive constituents of O. vulgare leaves extract are rosmarinic acid, linalool, thymol, carvacrol, tannins, flavonoids, triterpenes.
The high content of volatile essential oils is responsible for the antimicrobial activity, aroma, and flavor [12].

Oregano also contains iron, vitamins, calcium, copper, niacin, magnesium, and thiamine.
It has been used in the treatment of cancer, muscular degeneration, and heart disease.
This spice has long been used as a medicinal herb in ethnopharmacological preparations to treat various ailments such as respiratory disorders, dyspepsia, painful menstruation, rheumatoid arthritis, scrofulosis, and urinary tract disorders [8,9,10,11].

Externally, the essential oil of the plant is used for friction in cases of bronchitis, asthma, arthritis and muscle pain. Some drops of essential oil often relieve the toothache.
